Week One: Slip Knot and Cast On

This week we will learn the foundation for all knitting projects: the slip knot and cast-on.

Bind-Off (Knit Stitch)

When it is time to finish a project you can remove your needle and have all of your hard work unravel in seconds, or you can bind-off to secure the last row and keep a tidy knitted work looking top shape. Getting Started

What you need: - a pair of knitting needles, US size 7 is recommended. Use whatever material you feel comfortable with (metal, bamboo, plastic). If you already have another size, feel free to bring those. I have seen knitting needles in Michaels craft, Jo-Ann Fabric, Target and online for $4-$12. I don't recommend sharpened pencils- they often snag the yarn. - one skien of medium worsted weight yarn in any color, preferably a lighter color while beginning. I also have some practice yarn knitters can use while at club. - a small bag or box to keep your supplies in. This is also especially helpful while you are in the middle of a project on pause. Other helpful supplies: - one tapestry sized needle - scissors - pom pom maker or heavy cardboard - circular knitting needles (for later, more advanced projects)

How to Knit Stitch (After Your Cast On Row)

We made it through slip knots and casting on. The next step is to knit stitch. The important thing to remember for this stitch is that the empty needle enters the loop from front to back and the working yarn wraps around counter clockwise.
